Research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center

The biomedical research programs at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center encompass the work of scientists and physicians at the forefront of basic and translational science and clinical research.

Under the leadership of Dr. Thomas J. Kelly, Sloan-Kettering Institute's (SKI) research staff includes 93 laboratory investigators, 450 postdoctoral researchers, and 150 graduate students (both PhDs and MD/PhDs). The Institute boasts ten National Academy of Sciences members, five Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigators, and one Nobel laureate. Research training at SKI is offered under the guidance of the Institute's professional staff. The research activities are organized into eight research programs:

At Memorial Hospital, research investigations include translational research, which bridges discoveries made in the laboratory and those made in the clinic, as well as mathematical and computational research focused on analyzing and interpreting biomedical data. Reflecting these efforts, the Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program (HOPP) seeks to discover and develop novel approaches to detection, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

Located in the "research corridor" of Manhattan's Upper Eastside, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center enjoys a close collaboration with neighbors Cornell University and its Weill Medical College, as well as The Rockefeller University. This "tri-institutional" community is home to seven Nobel prize winners.

Graduate Training Programs

In 2004, Memorial Sloan-Kettering established a PhD program in cancer biology through its new Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. This novel program, which enrolled its first class in 2006, trains basic laboratory scientists to work in research areas directly relevant to cancer and other human diseases.

Sloan-Kettering Institute, in conjunction with Cornell University, participates in a PhD training program in the biological sciences through the Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences and a Tri-Institutional MD/PhD Program with The Rockefeller University and the Weill Medical College of Cornell University. More than 100 students from these programs are pursuing their thesis research in Memorial Sloan-Kettering laboratories, located in both the Rockefeller Research Laboratories and the new Zuckerman Research Center. Students in these programs are able to take advantage of all three institutions' rich resources.

Sloan-Kettering Institute, Cornell University, its Weill Medical College, and The Rockefeller University also offer Tri-institutional PhD Programs in Chemical Biology and Computational Biology and Medicine.
