The Center requires clinical fellows and postdoctoral researchers to reside in Center-owned housing in order to staff research and patient programs that operate 24 hours a day. If the Center does not have sufficient vacant housing stock to accommodate all research and clinical trainees, the Center will help obtain open-market rental apartments nearby.

The Center has housing options throughout the Upper East Side of Manhattan and on Roosevelt Island, convenient to the main campus.. The Upper East Side provides an exciting backdrop for your work at the Center, with its abundance of fine restaurants, cultural activities and neighborhood charm. Roosevelt Island (RI) provides our residents with modern apartments, superior amenities, including lounge/entertainment space, common patios and park-like surroundings with spectacular Manhattan skyline views. Residents on Roosevelt Island are also eligible for the childcare center that provides first class services for infants and children up to five years of age -- learn more at our childcare Web site.

Getting back and forth to Roosevelt Island is easy -- the commute takes about 20 minutes, either a short ride on the RI Tramway or one stop on the subway. Door-to-door car service is offered during off-hours.

The housing assignment process begins with the submission of a written request by your Sponsor or Department Chairman. The request should be submitted to the Housing Office as far in advance as possible. Given the great demand for housing accommodations, we suggest that this request be made about nine months to one year in advance of your actual arrival. Assignments are made based on the following criteria: application date, apartment type, affordability, family size, overall apartment availability and institutional priorities. When you receive your apartment assignment, the Housing Office will provide you with information about your apartment and building, and will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

In order to provide housing for as many clinical fellows and postdoctoral researchers as possible, there is currently a three-year limit on occupancy for these individuals. Should you be in training for longer than  three years, you will be asked to find independent housing by the end of your third year. We realize that this may cause you some inconvenience; however, compliance with this policy is essential if the Center is to provide housing to clinical fellows and postdoctoral researchers in the future.

Requests for extensions are reviewed by senior administration. Short housing extensions are granted on a limited basis for extenuating circumstances relating to childcare or schooling, medical conditions, or the need to closely match housing occupancy with the start date of your next position. Please be assured that should the need to relocate arise, we will make referrals to real estate brokers who have agreements with the Center to assist you in finding suitable housing. Information and details are available at the Housing Office.

We invite you to contact the Housing Office with your specific questions whenever you require assistance.

Center-owned buildings have live-in superintendents who act as property caretakers. They perform all cleaning and maintenance tasks. Should you have a maintenance problem, please feel free to contact the Housing Office, or ask your superintendent for assistance. Your building superintendent will also be able to answer specific questions you may have regarding your apartment or building. The Housing Department has a limited number of support staff such as mechanical, cleaning, painting, and doorman personnel. Available services vary depending on the building, so please confirm your building's services with the Housing Office upon your assignment.

In addition to superintendent services, all Memorial Sloan-Kettering residential buildings maintain 24-hour coverage for off-hour emergencies in the form of on-call maintenance personnel. The institution staffs an on-call operator who can be reached by calling 212-639-7886. If you have any questions regarding on-call coverage and how it works, please contact the Housing Office.
