About Us

For more than a century, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center has provided the very best cancer care available, and has been a leader in researching the causes, treatments, and prevention of cancer. Today we know that we are best able to cure cancer when we find it in its earliest stages. Better yet, we now know that you can help reduce your risk of developing cancer by undergoing the appropriate screening tests, paying attention to your family history, and adopting a healthy lifestyle.

We are committed to helping people prevent cancer or detect it in its earliest, most curable stages. Toward this end, in 1996 Memorial Sloan-Kettering acquired The Stella & Charles Guttman Breast Diagnostic Institute, located at 55 Fifth Avenue and 13th Street, in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan. For nearly three decades, The Guttman Institute has provided high-quality breast-cancer screening. The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Guttman Diagnostic Center is continuing this tradition of care by providing breast-cancer screening, as well as offering both women and men prevention and early detection services for gynecologic, prostate, and skin cancers.

Our Services

The Guttman Diagnostic Center is a place where women and men can go to receive sophisticated cancer screening in comfortable surroundings. For women, the Guttman Diagnostic Center provides mammography to some 18,000 women a year, as well as physical examinations and breast self-examination instruction. Fine-needle ultrasound-guided biopsy and cervical-cancer screening (pelvic exams and Pap smears) are also conducted. For men, the Guttman Diagnostic Center provides screening for prostate cancer.

The Guttman Diagnostic Center is dedicated to responding to the needs of each individual and to guiding the patient through the appropriate steps to ensure that he or she receives the right care at the right time. If necessary, referrals to Memorial Hospital are facilitated.
